Let me take you behind the scenes a bit. In the last post, I shared how a Twitter thread has forced me to look more closely at my opinions about a Women’s IPL, and sharpen them. Annoyed at some of the opinions I saw flying around about a WIPL, I challenged myself to put my own ideas out there. Even when I didn’t know what exactly they looked like.
What I thought would be one piece, on a revenue model for a Women’s IPL, eventually became three.
Not all of these pieces started from scratch. The first is from a podcast I was working on that has gone on ice. The second is from a piece that I’ve had in my head, and interviewed people for, since late 2019, but never saw the light of day.
The third was the challenge, was where I really had to put myself in the shoes of the BCCI, the franchises, the broadcasters and the women’s cricket players, to see if I could come up with a solution that makes sense for everyone. I think I did. I think you’ll like it.
Part 1 is out now, and available to read here. Yes, there’s a paywall. But the next two will be out this week, so with a month’s subscription you could read all three. Here’s a sneak peek:
But the point is that if you’re working on your ideas, creating things out of them, and even if you aren’t able to sell them at the time, they will fit in somewhere in the future. Keep at it.
Speaking of keeping at it: After being very consistent with this newsletter in November, December has been a bit of a slow writing month besides these three pieces. That’s mostly because I’ve been working hard on my commentary.
I was a part of the commentary team for the Women’s Challenger, and there was a lot of reasearch that needed to be done into the backstories of these players. But I think it was worth it, the broadcast seems to have been received well.
I got to do my first toss which I’m pretty excited about. You can’t see it in the video but I was so nervous my leg was shaking. My respect for my fellow broadcasters has only increased.
This week I’ll be commentating on the Ashes (2nd Test) in Hindi, another development I’m really excited about.
But with all that, there’s quite a bit happening, and that’s why I’m taking a bit of a break. From this newsletter. From YouTube. From Instagram, and later, Twitter. I made a YouTube video explaining why.
Part of the reason is because I’m going to be in the Himalayas for a week, and there’s just no network there :) No, I’m not taking sanyas. I’m going on my first Himalayan Trek this season!
But mostly, it’s because I’m taking some time to plan what my 2021 should look like. Are any of you like this, do you plan your year ahead? This isn’t something I usually do but I really feel the need for it this year. Send tips!
So I will see you guys in 2022. Don’t worry, this newsletter is definitely one of the things that’s going to make it to next year!
Happy new year in advance!
